Covid restrictions have brought about some big changes in the way businesses induct and train their staff – some of which are proving more efficient and engaging than traditional means.
In 2021, Wirral-based food distributor Smylie Ltd. sought to reinvent the way they introduced new staff to their business and address the ease of access to training materials and formed a partnership with fellow Chamber members, hi-impact.
Hi-impact has a long-established presence on the Wirral as an innovative education provider as well as having a media arm to the business, creating promotional film, photography and tours for businesses across the world. When Covid restrictions first hit the UK, hi-impact added a Learning & Development division to bring together its education and media expertise to create interactive learning resources.
Chris Smylie, MD at Smylie Ltd. explains in this video case study how working with hi-impact L&D brought about a plan to involve traditional media such as this instructional video embedded within 360-degree imagery from key locations of the warehouse, as well as interactive experiences. Staff can now be inducted, learn about the company’s values and entry procedures, as well as receive training on processes and equipment – all via their mobile devices or computers. In addition, hi-impact created a hidden hazard Health & Safety training experience for Smylies’ staff, allowing them to look for and identify potential issues in the workplace in a “safe to fail” online space.
During the planning phase, hi-impact brought in another Wirral company, CPL Online, to build a custom platform for Smylies to allow staff to have easy access not only to these new training and inductions resources but to all relevant company information – all from their phones or computers. Hi-impact’s Innovation Manager, Simon Sloan says “There is such a lot of creativity on the Wirral, and exciting, innovative partnerships such can further advance digital learning in the workplace.”
